With fluorescent penetrants, examination should be performed as follows: It should be performed in a darkened area with a maximum ambient white light level of 2 fc (21.5 lx) measured with a calibrated white light meter at the examination surface.
A light intensity of at least 1000 lux (100 fc) is recommended when visible particles are used, but a variety of light sources can be used. When fluorescent particles are used, special ultraviolet light must be used.
The greatest light levels are required by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), which is an arm of the USDA, for inspection areas within food processing facilities. These inspection areas require 200 foot-candles of shadow-free light, with a color rendering index of at least 85.
The inspector will use visible light with adequate intensity (100 foot-candles or 1100 lux is typical) for visible dye penetrant.
The light intensity is required to be 100 foot-candles at the surface being inspected. It is advisable to choose a white light wattage that will provide sufficient light, but avoid excessive reflected light that could distract from the inspection.
