When dealing with a diesel vehicle, your EGT is a critical factor in its performance. Generally speaking, the lower your EGT, the better. At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550°C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engine's safety.
Best DPI setting You do want to avoid playing at too high of a DPI, anything past 12000 is likely excessive, but more importantly, some sensors at this DPI accelerate and emulate the dots per inch, causing inconsistencies, it's not a true raw DPI.
LOP requires that once you reach peak EGT you continue to lean the mixture—usually 25 to 50 degrees F on the lean side for normally aspirated engines. There are times—very high power settings for one—when LOP can be harmful to an engine, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be practiced at all.
Therefore, the exhaust gas temperature should be controlled below 135℃. If the exhaust gas temperature is too high, the lubricating oil may be carbonized and deteriorated and the lubricating performance will be reduced.
The most common method is using the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) gauge, which is the direct indicator of the fuel-to-air ratio in the engine. When you decide to start leaning the engine, pull the mixture back slowly. As the EGT temperature climbs, it will eventually slow down.
For towing, we'd say 1,200 degrees is a safe number, with occasional spikes of up to 1,400 degrees when climbing grades being an acceptable risk. The concept of EGT is analogous to putting something in the oven.
This is known as “stoichiometric mixture”. Leaning the mixture further past this perfect fuel:air ratio results in too little fuel entering the cylinder for the volume of air. This results in weaker combustion (due to the fuel shortage) and the EGT starts to come down.
Exhaust gases normally discharges at a temperature of around 420°C (788°F).
How Hot Is Too Hot for EGT's? Based on our own experience in the sled pulling and drag racing world, we can definitely say that any engine running at 1,800 to 2,000 degrees EGT for more than a second or two should be rebuilt every season and may incur turbocharger, cylinder head, or piston damage during the season.
Technique: Leaning the mixture At altitude, set cruise power. Lean by reducing the mixture gradually until the engine runs a little rough. ... Slowly enrich the mixture until the engine smooths out.
