Lighting or illumination is the deliberate use of light to achieve practical or aesthetic effects. Lighting includes the use of both artificial light sources like lamps and light fixtures, as well as natural illumination by capturing daylight.
Lighting is especially important in a 3D animation because it must support the story, convey the mood of a shot and also visually depict the location, time of day, and even the weather convincingly. These factors have a much heavier weight when it comes to longer projects.
Philosophy of lighting scenes. Lighting design creates the physical needs as visibility for different tasks. It ensures the psychological needs of the visual comfort, mood, atmosphere, health, and safety.
Lighting plays a key role in rendering and making things look believable and realistic. While there are many things that play into the quality of a render like materials, textures and a lot more, lighting is something that must be set up just right to achieve the look you want.
Directional Light A directional light (also known as infinite light) is great for simulating the sun or moonlight because the light it creates travels in parallel rays; like a faraway light source.
Heres how to set them up in your 3D scenes: Start in Darkness. Make sure there are no default lights, and theres no global ambience. Add your Key Light. The Key Light creates the subjects main illumination, and defines the most visible lighting and shadows. Add your Fill Light(s). Add Rim Light.
Rays bounce off shapes and interact with their materials, effectively defining how objects appear in the final image. Lights expose dimensionality of anything that exists in a 3D scene. Some materials are more sensitive to lighting conditions than others.
The three types of lights are key light, fill light, and backlight. Key light. This is the primary and brightest light source in the three-point lighting setup. It gives a scene its overall exposure.
