A codicil is a legal document that dictates any modifications or amendments to your last Will and Testament. If, for any reason, you feel the need to change some part of your Will which can include adding new arrangements or removing old ones you can easily do so with a codicil.
A codicil must be signed and witnessed in the same way as the original will, and it must be executed with the same formalities. Codicils are typically used when a person wants to make a few minor changes to their will, rather than creating a new one from scratch.
I, Testator Name , a resident of the County of , and State of , being of sound mind, memory and understanding, do make, publish and declare this to be a Codicil to my Last Will and Testament dated Date of Last Will and Testament (my Will).
Undue Influence, Forgery, or Fraud Another common reason that a codicil may be invalid is undue influence. This occurs when a third party manipulates someone through extreme pressure, force, or threats to create the codicil or name them as a beneficiary or executor when they otherwise would not have done so.
In general, a party seeking to invalidate a codicil to a Will may assert that the codicil was improperly executed, that the decedent lacked capacity to execute the codicil on the date it was executed, or finally that the decedent was subjected to undue influence by another individual which caused the decedent to
There is, however, a drawback: A codicil is unlikely to seamlessly fit with the original will. Is it a pure addition, or does it also negate something in the original document? If its supposed to replace part of the first will, which part?
State in the document that its a codicil to your existing will and that it overrides your existing will. State in the document that youre of sound mind. State clearly and precisely in the document which parts of the will youre changing and explain in detail exactly how you want things changed. Be specific.

I, [name], a resident of the County of [county], State of [state], declare that this is the codicil to my last will and testament, which is dated [date original signed]. I add or change said last will in the following manner: [List all specific changes or additions to the original will.
Does a codicil override a will? Yes, a codicil overrides a will and any previous codicils to the extent the new codicil conflicts with those prior documents. In other words, a codicil only changes those particular provisions referenced in the codicil while leaving everything else the same.
