Hello and welcome to another video of Breaking Bad English with me David Crofts. In this video I would like to talk about some very common abbreviations in English. And the ones I mean are these - Ill show you - there we go ! So what are these abbreviations and what exactly do they mean? So the first one e g. So e-g in a spoken form should be for example. It is from Latin, in fact, and it means exempli gratia. So when do we use it? When we want to give an example of something, a general example. So yesterday I went to the supermarket and I bought some food, for example, or e.g., milk, bread and cheese. So I gave you an example of some of the things I bought. Maybe I bought some more things as well but I just gave you an example. Compare that to the abbreviation i-e (i.e.)which is id est in Latin and id est actually means THAT IS. So in this example, I went to the shop yesterday and i bought some food i.e. milk, bread, potatoes, cheese and sugar.
