Today were gonna be talking about the differences between log footage and linear footage when it comes to grading, and why just adding contrast and saturation to log footage usually isnt enough to get an accurate image. Lets get undone. [offbeat music] ♪ Gerald Undone ♪ ♪ Hes crazy ♪ Whats happening, everybody? Im Gerald Undone, and I perceive the world with 18% grey. So, I already made a previous video demonstrating how to match the colours from different cameras, and also how to manipulate your curves to take the log footage from different cameras and turn it into sort of a neutral, accurate standard. And while that video was well-received, many of you asked if we could take a more beginner look at log and how to correct it a bit more easily. So thats what were gonna do today. And for the more advanced colourists out there, I ask that you excuse some of the oversimplifications that were going to use in this video in order to keep this video a bit easier to digest. So a log does record the details, it just spreads them out in way that ensures the widest dynamic range. Unfortunately, the human eye cannot see it, yet. That is until a LUT is applied to that recorded footage. Footage shot via a log with no LUT applied in post.
LOG is a specific video format processed in the camera, unlike RAW, which is totally unprocessed. LOG footage can be viewed on an external monitor without conversion. And, because its a video format, certain components such as white balance and exposure are made part of the video.
When a camera operator shoots LOG, the image is flat and desaturated. This adds the flexibility of color grading in post. LOG was invented by Kodak in the early 1990s with their Cineon film scanning system, which won an Academy Award for technology.
What is log video? Log is short for logarithmic. A log picture profile on your camera uses a different type of gamma curve than a standard profile such as Rec. 709. The benefit of shooting in log is that your video files will have a higher dynamic range.
Log grading is specifically used when the footage has been shot in a log format, which is a type of video format that preserves more details in the shadows and highlights of the image. In log grading, the colorist adjusts the colors in the log footage to make them appear more natural and balanced.
First and foremost is the fact that shooting in log isnt always necessary. Because log is primarily designed to maximize dynamic range, it makes sense to shoot log in tricky lighting conditions where you expect there to be both extremely bright and dark parts in the image.
A log profile, or logarithmic profile, is a shooting profile, or gamma curve, found on some digital video cameras that gives a wide dynamic and tonal range, allowing more latitude to apply colour and style choices.
By mapping out our values on a logarithmic curve we can keep all the information in the areas it is most perceivable, but ignore and get rid of the information we cant see. Because of this, LOG footage is far more efficient with its bit depth than RAW so its file sizes are much smaller.
