[INTRO MUSIC] Welcome to 60-Second Civics, the daily podcast of the Center for Civic Education. Im Mark Gage. Land was plentiful in the thirteen American colonies, but labor was scarce. There simply were not enough people to farm and perform all the tasks needed to keep a colony running. It was also expensive to sail from Britain to America. This reality created incentives for indentured servitude. Indentured servants agreed to an indenture, which is a contract obligating them to work for a certain amount of time in exchange for passage to the colonies aboard a ship and room and board once they arrived. The length of time was often four years or more. Once they served out their contracts, indentured servants were sometimes awarded what were called freedom dues, which might include land, animals, clothing, and other goods helpful in starting life as a free person in America. Life for indentured servants was hard, however, and many died of disease in the harsh climate of the colonies.
