Write descriptions with a clear structure. Work from the general to the specific: provide an overview of the image before you describe specific details.
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) recommend avoiding using images of text if you intend the text to be read by the user, unless its essential or necessary such as in a logo or brand name, in which case the alt text should be the same as the text in the image.
Icons are small images that represent an action or concept, such as a magnifying glass icon for search, a trash can icon for delete, or a heart icon for favourite. Images of maps are functional as they help users find locations and get directions.
Writing for Web Accessibility Provide informative, unique page titles. Use headings to convey meaning and structure. Make link text meaningful. Write meaningful text alternatives for images. Create transcripts and captions for multimedia. Provide clear instructions. Keep content clear and concise.
Captions are text descriptions for an image that are displayed on the page, thus allowing sighted and non-sighted users information about the image. If a caption is present, the alt text attribute should be null ( Alt= ). Images with the text description within the content of the page do not require alt text.
Write helpful Alt Text to describe images Add alt text all non-decorative images. Keep it short and descriptive, like a tweet. Dont include image of or photo of. Leave alt text blank if the image is purely decorative. Its not necessary to add text in the Title field.
Image descriptions help those with visual impairments understand the meaning of an image. This description is often labeled alt text or alternative text. When a screen reader docHubes an image, it will read aloud the description that has been added. The user gets a sense of what that image is and its purpose in context.
Be brief. Alt text of an image should be short and to the point. Listening to long alt text can be burdensome for assistive technology users. Longer alt text might also be a problem because it may provide more information to assistive technology users giving a disadvantaged to sighted users.
