The heading tag is used in HTML to define headings of a page. Headings are defined by , with “n” being a number between 1 and 6, and determines which position a heading has in the hierarchy of the heading structure. Heading tags have a particularly important function within an HTML structure.
Headings are signposts that help you structure longer pieces of writing and allow the reader easily navigate their way around a document. The type of headings used will depend on the format of your writing: for example, a case study will have different headings to a report.
To break it down, remember: H1 = Main keywords and subject matter, what the overall post is about. H2 = Sections to break up content, using similar keywords to the H1 tag. H3 = Subcategories to further break up the content, making it easily scannable.
HTML defines six levels of headings. A heading element implies all the font changes, paragraph breaks before and after, and any white space necessary to render the heading. The heading elements are H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, and H6 with H1 being the highest (or most important) level and H6 the least.

HTML was written as an SGML application. Each element type had to be defined explicitly (DTDs provide no way to define element types with wild cards), so an infinite number could not be defined. 6 was presumably chosen because it was assumed that nobody would need a sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-heading.
