here at at the conference I decided to present some of the work were doing in hepatocellular cancer there weve been targeting alpha-fetoprotein as a tumor antigen and its a and we found it has immune modular Tory function so I presented some of our recent data on those immune modulator effects of alpha-fetoprotein we find that in addition to being a target for t-cell responses we also find a number of effects on myeloid cells we cultured myeloid dendritic cells with alpha-fetoprotein both cord blood derived normal AFP and tumor derived tumor AFP and found some very potent inhibitory effects on the functions of myeloid derived dendritic cells well the I suspect that it helps co-opt the immune system in favor of the tumour by suppressing the ability of myeloid dendritic cells to present antigen and to promote anti-tumor immunity one of the effects we see as potent suppression of metabolism of those dendritic cells and so that suppresses their ability to activate t-cells hence promoti

What is a good AFP?

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a fetal protein that is initially produced in the fetal yolk sac and liver. A small amount is produced by the gastrointestinal tract. By the end of the first trimester, nearly all AFP is produced by the fetal liver. The concentration of AFP peaks in fetal serum between 10 to 13 weeks.

How accurate is AFP test during pregnancy?

This means it is not 100% accurate. It is only a screening test to see who might need more tests for their pregnancy. There can be false-positive results. These results show a problem when the baby is actually healthy.

How often are AFP tests wrong?

Only about 3 to 5 percent of women will receive a positive (abnormal) result on the multiple marker and on average, only about one or two percent of those women will actually have a baby with a problem. That adds up to a lot of false positive results. But that is the way a screening test works.
