Mark out and excavate to around 6” (150mm) deep, within the excavated area, lay approximately 3” (75mm) of firmly compacted hardcore to act as a sound foundation and level with compacted sand if appropriate. You may wish to use a rake to aid with the leveling process.
Log homes typically cost 20 to 30 percent more than a conventionally built home. The same size log home is typically worth 30 to 40 percent more than a conventional home.
The space created by the gap in the logs was called the chink, and it let in drafty air and small pests. Early log home builders realized quickly that they needed something to fill in the chink and keep out the elements.

After the logs were stacked, gaps remained in the walls, and settlers had to "chink" their cabins. "Chinking" consisted of jamming sticks and wood chips into the gaps, and then filling in the remaining space with a homemade cement of earth, sand, and water.
There are two types of fastening techniques used to connect wall logs -- mechanical fastening and adhesive bonding. Mechanical fasteners include bolts, drift pins, lag screws, log/timber screws and spikes. Adhesive bonding is accomplished by placing a bead of mastic or sealant product along the length of the log.
Typically, if the span or depth between the logs is less than 1 inch then caulking should be used. Caulking can also be used to fill checks (i.e. horizontal cracks) in logs too. If the span or depth between the logs is greater than 1 inch then it's time to use chinking.
Raft Foundation (Concrete Base) A raft foundation is a very simple foundation technique where a raft of concrete is laid underneath your entire log cabin. The raft foundation is used to spread the entire base of the cabin's load over all of the site's floor area.
The average lifespan of chinking in log cabins depends upon your efforts. If installed correctly and with minimal maintenance to replace any tears, it can last for almost 20 to 40 years. Annual maintenance and the right application of the chinking material matter the most when it comes to how long does chinking last.
The two methods that are primarily used to repair gaping log walls are chink and caulk. Caulk is typically used when the gap is ¾ of an inch and chink is used when the gaps are larger. Both chink and caulk are designed to withstand the normal movement and settling of the cabin.
