The CSV filetype is a plain text file that holds lists of data and is useful for moving information between different software. Sometimes when opening a CSV file in Microsoft Excel the data appears jumbled such as in this example. This data is from an Atlas Copco MTF6000 controller and contains torque verification data. By examining the text I can see that the data is separated using semicolons, not commas. This would explain why Excel isnt properly displaying the data. To fix this issue we must open the Text Import Wizard. In older versions of Excel this is done by opening the CSV file using the File Import action, but in this newer version we must manually open the file by selecting File, then opening it from the disk or recent files list. Now that the Text Import Wizard is open we must tell Excel to use the Delimited data type which separates the text into fields using certain characters. Select Delimited and click next. We determined that this Atlas Copco log file uses semicolon

Anyone familiar with spreadsheet programs has very likely encountered CSV files before - theyre easily consumed by Google Spreadsheet, Microsoft Excel, and countless other applications.
Sometimes, you might need to save a workbook in another file format, like a text (txt) or a comma-separated values format (csv). Just keep in mind that whenever you save a workbook in another file format, some of its formatting, data, and features might not be saved.
Open your CSV using a text editor. Press Enter/Return to create a new line at the very top, and add sep=; if the separator used in the CSV is a semicolon (;), or sep=, if the separator is a comma (,). Save your changes (command + S or control + S), then re-open in any Spreadsheet app.
To format in Microsoft Excel, do the following: Open Microsoft Excel. Click File New Workbook in Excels top toolbar. Click From Text in the Data tab. Select the desired . Click Get Data. Select the radio button next to Delimited in the Text Import Wizard. Click Next. Select the appropriate Delimiters.
Corrupt Characters in Excel from CSV File Open Excel by itself with a new worksheet (do not select the CSV filename to open Excel). Click on the Data tab and select From Text. In the Import Text File wizard, select Delimited and in the File Origin box select 65001: Unicode (UTF-8). Click Next, then Finish.
CSV , or Comma-separated Values, is an extremely common flat-file format that uses commas as a delimiter between values.Format Strings containing embedded commas, newlines, or quotes will themselves be quoted. Quotes within values are escaped by doubling them, so becomes .
CSV (comma delimited) will not open correctly and the data within will be displayed incorrectly. This is due to regional Excel settings that have default list separator options where files will either be read with a comma separator or semicolon separator.
Common issues with importing a CSV (and the work-arounds to fix them) The most common CSV import errors include: The file size is too large - The CSV import tool of the program youre using might have a file size requirement. To reduce the file size, you can delete unnecessary data values, columns, and rows.
Open Microsoft Excel (make sure it is the Excel file you want to duplicate in CSV format). Underneath file name at the bottom of the save screen you will see option Save as type. In this field select CSV (Comma delimited). Two dialogue boxes pop ups will appear alerting you that formatting is different.
Using the From Text feature in Excel Open the Excel file that youre trying to change in terms of data formatting. Click the Data tab, then From Text. Select the CSV file that has the data clustered into one column. Select Delimited, then make sure the File Origin is Unicode UTF-8.
