The law of demand is a fundamental principle of economics that states that at a higher price, consumers will demand a lower quantity of a good. Demand is derived from the law of diminishing marginal utility, the fact that consumers use economic goods to satisfy their most urgent needs first.
Example: gasoline demand function For example, the relationship between the demand for gasoline (Q) and factors such as its price (P), consumer income (I), and the price of cars (PC) is defined as follows: Qd = 9.3 0.7P + 0.2I 0.03 PC.
In its standard form a linear demand equation is Q = a - bP. That is, quantity demanded is a function of price. The inverse demand equation, or price equation, treats price as a function f of quantity demanded: P = f(Q).
A demand function is defined by p=f(x), p = f ( x ) , where p measures the unit price and x measures the number of units of the commodity in question, and is generally characterized as a decreasing function of x; that is, p=f(x) p = f ( x ) decreases as x increases.
You use the demand formula, Qd = x + yP, to find the demand line algebraically or on a graph. In this equation, Qd represents the number of demanded hats, x represents the quantity and P represents the price of hats in dollars. Assume that at a price of $5.00 per hat, the supplier can supply 400 hats.
The demand is calculated as the price the consumers are willing to pay for the product or service. If we keep all other factors constant, the demand should go up as the prices go down, and the demand should go down as the prices go up. This simple principle keeps the market in equilibrium.
