Its possible, but once youre over age 24, you can no longer be claimed as a qualifying child. The only exception to this is if youre permanently and totally disabled. However, you can be claimed as a qualifying relative if you meet these requirements: Your gross income is less than $4,700.
However, to claim a college student as a dependent on your taxes, the Internal Revenue Service has determined that the qualifying child or qualifying relative must: Be younger than the taxpayer (or spouse if MFJ) and: Be under age 19, Under age 24 and a full-time student for at least five months of the year.
There is no age limit for how long you can claim adult children or other relatives as dependents, but they must meet other IRS requirements to continue to qualify. Additionally, once they are over 18 and no longer a student, they can only qualify as an other dependent, not a qualifying child.
Make sure your dependent meets the IRS requirements. Generally, the IRS requires that the child is under the age of 19 (or under 24 if a full-time student), lives with you for more than half the year, and does not provide more than half of their own financial support.
You must be under the age of 19 for your parents to claim you as a dependent. However, if you are a full-time student, you must be under age 24 in order for your parents to claim you as a dependent. If you are totally and permanently disabled, there is no age limit for your parents to claim you as a dependent.
Age. Your student must be less than 24 years old on December 31 of that tax year and younger than you (or your spouse, if filing jointly).
To meet the qualifying child test, your child must be younger than you or your spouse if filing jointly and either younger than 19 years old or be a student younger than 24 years old as of the end of the calendar year.
Payments for the services of a child are subject to income tax withholding regardless of age. Payments for the services of a child under age 18 are not subject to social security and Medicare taxes.
