The regulation at 29 CFR 1960.25(c) charges each agency with the responsibility to conduct an annual workplace safety and health inspection.
Safety inspection (also called safety audit) is an on-site monitoring aimed at identifying potential problems that could jeopardize the health and safety of workers at workplaces or buildings.
OSHA Safety Inspection Guidelines Now, construction safety inspections, or self-inspections as OSHA refers to them, are recommended to cover the entire worksite and be done weekly. Therefore, all subcontractors on-site should also follow a similar inspection schedule.
It needs to be simple and easy-to-use in the field. The design must be simply, with items in an order that is logical to the way each type of equipment will be inspected. If it is too generic, it wont be effective. A checklist needs to be specific to the type of equipment that need to be checked.
Common sections to include in a Field Inspection Report Providing a brief summary of the purpose of the field inspection and the location of the inspection. Details of Inspection: Provide a detailed description of the inspection, including the areas inspected and the findings of the inspection.
Stick to a routine Set how often you perform a walkthrough safety inspection and stay on track. Work environments and hazards vary greatly, so set a frequency that makes sense for your organization, whether it be monthly, quarterly or annually.
Safety inspections should be conducted at least every six months. Who should do the inspections? It has to be someone who is familiar with the workplace, task or job. The best way is to have a supervisor and an employee from the area inspect together.
How often you do self-inspections depends on the nature of the work and potential for hazards to develop. Monthly or quar- terly self-inspections may be fine for an office or for assembly work with few machines. Weekly inspections may be necessary for manufacturing with many machines or processes.
