The James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA) was signed on November 11, 1975. It was the first major comprehensive land claims agreement in Canada, heralding in a new era in aboriginal land claims.
This 50-year agreement allows for joint jurisdiction between the Quebec government and Cree in the seven municipalities of James Bay and surrounding territories. In exchange, the Cree consented to hydroelectric development of the Eastmain and Rupert Rivers by Hydro-Qubec.
