The Minimum Equipment List is a document used by air operators consisting of a list of inoperative equipment that an aircraft can have before making a flight. It is a way to ensure that the remaining pieces of equipment are operational.
A Minimum Equipment List (MEL) is an FAA approved document that allows an aircraft owner/operator to fly with a certain item(s) inoperative. The Federal Aviation Administration produces a Master Minimum Equipment List (MMEL) for most aircraft to use. They provide the format that is acceptable to the administrator.
The master minimum equipment list (MMEL) is a list established for a particular aircraft type by the organisation responsible for the type design with the approval of the State of Design which identifies items which individually may be unserviceable at the commencement of a flight.
The Minimum Equipment List is a document used by air operators consisting of a list of inoperative equipment that an aircraft can have before making a flight. It is a way to ensure that the remaining pieces of equipment are operational.
The AEG is the FAA office responsible for the development and publication of an approved MMEL for those aircraft within its area of responsibility. b. Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM).
Minimum Equipment List (MEL) means a document approved by or declared to the competent authority, as applicable, that authorises an operator to dispatch an aeroplane with aeroplane items inoperative under the conditions specified therein.
The dispatch under a Minimum Equipment List (MEL) item allows to dispatch an aircraft in a safe and airworthy condition when certain system functions or equipment are temporarily unavailable or inoperative, enabling the aircraft to continue earning revenue without compromising the safety of the flight.
If youre operating a turbine aircraft, Part 91 requires that you have a MEL. Old turbine aircraft operating under Part 91 are often the most neglected regarding maintenance, and some Part 91 operators are known to operate (illegally) without approved MELs.
Some operators of aircraft, based on the kind of operation or size and type of aircraft are required to have a Minimum Equipment List (MEL) in order to operate the aircraft with inoperative instruments or equipment. However, operators of the following types of aircraft may operate under part 91 without an MEL.
You will mostly find MELs in aircraft operating under Part 121, 125 and 135. The military also uses MELs. This is not to say Part 91 operators wont have MELs, it is just a little more unusual.
