Collectors typically will pay between $35 to $350 for a good quality antique tintype in good condition. Tintypes are more common photographs of the Victorian era and thus, they are not as valuable as ambrotypes or daguerreotypes which are more rare.
Tintypes with flaking emulsions should be stored flat and stored in low humidity. Loose tintypes in good condition are best stored in a sturdy four-flap enclosure; if cased, they are best stored in acid-free tissue and placed in a folding box to prevent breakage and abrasion.
Tintypes might be physical photographs, but its common to scan them so people have a digital copy as well. A lot of people will use a scanner, but you can get probably as good, if not better, quality by shooting it with a really high-resolution digital camera, says Clifford.
Scan The Photo. Printed photos can be scanned using a computer scanner and then printed using a colour photo printer. You will need a high-resolution scanner, photographic paper and a quality printer in order to print the highest quality duplicates of your original photo.
Scanning a tintype once or twice wont hurt it. Scanning it hundreds of times will. Just be very careful putting it on the scanneryou could scratch both the tintype AND the scanner glass. If you set it down gently and then dont move it while its touching the glass you should be fine.
Tintypes are pieces of metal coated with a photographic emulsion. They are fairly sturdy, but the emulsion and metal can corrode with handling over time. If you have a tintype, you should make a copy to display so the original can be kept safely stored. You can either scan a copy or take a photograph of the tintype.
