After blood is drawn, it is tested for ABO group (blood type) and Rh type (positive or negative), as well as for any unexpected red blood cell antibodies that may cause problems for the transfusion recipient. Blood is tested for: Hepatitis B virus. Hepatitis C virus.
Pre-transfusion check Two staff members independently check: Legal name (family and given name) Date of birth. MRN. Match exactly on: ID band. Luggage tag attached to blood product. Patients EMR story board. Within BPAM: Link the IV line to be used for transfusion. Scan the ID band after the above checks are completed.
To determine if you are eligible to donate we will: Ask about your health and travel. Ask about medicines you are taking or have taken. Ask about your risk for infections that can be transmitted by bloodespecially AIDS and viral hepatitis. Take your blood pressure, temperature and pulse.
If you have recently had a tattoo or body piercing you cannot donate for 6 months from the date of the procedure. If the body piercing was performed by a registered health professional and any inflammation has settled completely, you can donate blood after 12 hours.
Youll also get a short health exam or mini-physical. An employee will take your pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, and take a small amount of blood for testing.Theyll ask you about: Your health history. Travel. Medications you take. Sexual activity (questions are about specific behaviors, not sexual orientation)
In order to donate blood, a woman must have a hemoglobin level of at least 12.5 g/dL, and a man must have a hemoglobin level of at least 13.0 g/dL. For all donors, the hemoglobin level can be no greater than 20 g/dL. Separate requirements for hemoglobin level apply for Power Red.
What does it take to be a blood donor? Blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Sixteen year olds must present a signed parental permission form. Visit .nybloodcenter.org/16 to obtain the form.
