A Databricks-backed secret scope is stored in an encrypted database managed by Azure Databricks. You can create a Databricks-backed secret scope using the Databricks CLI.
1. Storing Sensitive Credentials Create a Databricks Secret Scope in the Databricks UI or CLI. Define the secrets name, key vault, and scope. Store sensitive credentials securely within the Actual Secret Information scope. Manage access to the Actual Secret Information scope to control who can read or write secrets.
These properties are available from the Properties tab of an Azure Key Vault in your Azure portal. Click the Create button. Use the Databricks CLI databricks secrets list-scopes command to verify that the scope was created successfully.
You cannot access secret values by using the Databricks CLI. To access secret values, you must use the Databricks Utilities secrets utility within a Databricks notebook.
To set up secrets you: Create a secret scope. Secret scope names are case insensitive. Add secrets to the scope. Secret names are case insensitive. If you have the Premium plan or above, assign access control to the secret scope.
Azure Databricks enables special behavior for variables referencing secrets based on the syntax of the value being set, not the variable name. The syntax of the Spark configuration property or environment variable value must be {{secrets//}} .
When displayed in notebook cell output, the secret values are replaced with [REDACTED] . For example, if you set a variable to a secret value using dbutils. secrets. get() and then print that variable, that variable is replaced with [REDACTED] .
To manage secrets, you can use the Databricks CLI to access the Secrets API. Administrators, secret creators, and users granted permission can read Databricks secrets.
