Quotations yield the greatest insight from the fewest words. In addition to the wisdom and guidance quotations provide, teachers effectively use quotations in displays, presentations, speeches, research, writing prompts, classroom lessons, and discussions.
In fact, if you can remember the three main rules below, you should be in good shape. 1 Place punctuation marks inside quotation marks. 2 Capitalize the first letter of the quoted sentence. 3 Include an opening quotation mark at the beginning of each new quoted paragraph.
your reader understand why a quotation is important in the context of your argument. Say something relevant about the quoted passage. Restate the context or meaning of the quotation in your own words. Show us how you are using the quotation to support your argument.
Teaching is more effective and learning more successful when students participate in planning and starting the lesson.
The Quote Sandwich Sections: Top Bread: Introduce your quote, paraphrase, or summary using the authors credentials, where appropriate, and always using a signal phrase. Filling/Meat/Trimming: Use the quote, paraphrase, or summary. Bottom Bread: Explain your quote, paraphrase, or summary in several sentances.

Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
Rules for using the Quotation Marks Rule 1: Use quotation marks to separate a direct quote (word-for-word) from the rest of the sentence. Rule 2: Use a comma to introduce a quote after words like said, asked, or exclaimed. Rule 3: Always keep any punctuation that is part of the quote inside the quotation marks.
5 Ways to Use Quotations in the Classroom Display them in groups as a motivational wall or individually as part of your classroom decor. Use them as writing prompts. Use them as discussion starters.
