One of the largest benefits of RAW is the ability to recover shadows and highlights in post-processing without bringing in the grainy noise usually associated with high ISO settings. RAWs are very forgiving if you have severely underexposed or overexposed areas.
A RAW image contains wider dynamic range and color gamut compared to a JPEG image. For highlight and shadow recovery when an image or parts of an image are underexposed or overexposed, a RAW image provides far better recovery potential compared to JPEG.
As a photographer, you develop your own way of processing your images, and in reality, this is what the client will have booked you for in the first instance. Unless you are passing the raw files across for processing by a retoucher, then the RAW files should stay with you.
If a client were to show these unedited or unretouched images to family and friends, it could severely harm the photographers reputation. A professional artist only displays their best work. Having raw, unfinished photos represented to others as their work could make a photographer look unprofessional and incompetent.
However, its important to understand that if you print a raw file without making any adjustments you will end up with an image that is virtually identical to a JPEG file that was shot simultaneously. The only difference will be that the raw file is larger and gives you much greater flexibility for editing.
RAW files are unedited and therefore are not an accurate representation of your work or your brand. If you are taking on clients, it is vital that you deliver to them only your very best work.
Raw offers more creative processing flexibility The JPEG processing applied by the camera is designed to produce a good-looking image right out of the camera, and this processing cannot be undone. A raw file, on the other hand, is processed by you; so you can decide how the image will look.
Most professional photographers dont provide raw files to their client. If you want raw files from your photographer, it normally implies there is something about the photographers finished product that you dont like, and you should have a conversation with your photographer about your concerns.
There isnt a great deal of difference between the two, but the JPEG is sharper than the RAW file. This is understandable as the in-camera processing has sharpened the JPEG image whilst the RAW file doesnt have any sharpening.
