DPI stands for dots per square inch. A 300 DPI image is considered to be a high quality photo for print. More dots = higher quality.
Most businesses consider 600dpi and higher to be a high-resolution image or print. High-resolution images require more memory to store and can take longer to scan. Storing high-resolution images can quickly fill a hard drive or server.
A 1200 DPI represents that there would be 1200 dots in a square inch of print. This is doubled by 600 dpi which denotes the higher print quality of a document.
Higher DPI is typically better for smaller images like negatives or slides and is kind of overkill. 600 to 2400 DPI is a good size for almost every scan and future print. We know you'll be happy with those sizes.
That same photo scanned at 600 dpi (resulting in a 2400 x 3600 pixel size image) will be about 24 Mb as an uncompressed TIF, 16 Mb as a compressed TIF and only 4 Mb as a print quality JPEG.
DPI: dots per inch A printer may have a resolution of “300 DPI” which means in one inch there are 300 individual dots of ink. Everything else being equal, a higher DPI image of 600 will appear more detailed than a 300 DPI image, but there's a lot more to it than that.
Is 300 DPI better than 600 DPI or does it work the other way? It depends, in fact, on what you are printing and what material is used. A higher resolution might be needed for glossy photos or images with lots of details that need to be crisp. Then 600 DPI could be a better option.
600 DPI printing simply means that the printer compresses 600 dots horizontally as well as 600 dots vertically for every square inch of the card. This allows users to print ultra-high resolution pictures, micro-text, OCR codes, and 1D & 2D barcodes.
