- Hi everyone. Sal Khan here from Khan academy. My Social Security Number is 857, - 32 - 5567. No, its not. I wouldnt tell you my Social Security Number like that. And thats because it is personally identifiable information, or PII. And theres a reason why you want to keep that to yourself, or at least limit who has access to PII. Because if someone has access, they can expose your privacy, tell the world where you live, they could track you and they could tell the world what youve been up to, maybe when you should be working what websites youre visiting, or, even worse, potentially, they could steal your identity, take money out of your bank account, take a credit card in your name, do some other form of identity theft that could be embarrassing, or super costly. So, if you have some type of a service, either online or otherwise, thats asking for something like your Social Security Number, or your birthday, which might be a little bit more indirect, or your email address, or yo

Administrative Safeguards: Procedures implemented at the administrative level to protect private information such as training personnel on information handling best practices.
Personally identifiable information (PII) is data which can be used to identify, locate, or contact an individual and includes information like name, date of birth, place of residence, credit card information, phone number, race, gender, criminal record, age, and medical records.
For physical security, store files with PII in locked file cabinets, require employees to put secure files they are working on in a secure place, implement strict building access control and store PII at a secure off-site location. When it comes to electronic security, you should follow best practices in securing PII.
Encrypt PII Encrypting your PII at rest and in transit is a non-negotiable component of PII protection. Use strong encryption and key management and always make sure you that PII is encrypted before it is shared over an untrusted network or uploaded to the cloud.
Tips for handling PII: Protect: Everyone has the responsibility to protect PII in any form (physical or electronic, sensitive or non-sensitive) from unauthorized disclosure, modification, or destruction in order to ensure its confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommends AES as the highest standard for encryption, with three different key sizes: 128 bit, 192 bit, and 256 bits. RSA: This is an encryption standard named after its three inventors: Rivest, Shamir and Adleman.
Three Steps to Protecting PII in the Government Identify your PII through marking and metadata tagging. Educate and build awareness of the organizations PII among employees, contractors, and partners. Select the appropriate controls to protect PII.
When emailing Sensitive PII outside of DHS, save it in a separate document and password-protect or encrypt it. Send the encrypted document as an email attachment and provide the password to the recipient in a separate email or by phone. [See the instructions in the Handbook for Safeguarding Sensitive PII.]
