In picture books, students learn how reality works, how human relationships are established and maintained, and how elements of experience are put together to be meaningful. Learning about these aspects of reality helps bring up relevant issues for discussion in class.
Images make learning more memorable and engaging and they are great stimuli for language production, thinking and discussions in the classroom.
Generally speaking, using copyrighted images for teaching and education is considered fair use. However, if that includes posting images to a website, that could be considered a publication and therefore copyright infringement.
Using visual imagery, students imagine what the characters might see, hear, feel, taste, or smell. The visual imagery strategy is effective for improving comprehension, especially in descriptive texts or literature rich in sensory details.
Quicker learning process The human brain processes visuals around 60,000 times faster than text by quickly deciphering illustrative elements simultaneously, whereas when dealing with text, it has to decode elements in a sequential manner, thus, taking more time to process the information.
Objective: To encourage pupils to describe and observe details in the given pictures; ▪ To give pupils the opportunity to create various corresponding sentences; ▪ To involve pupils in sequencing; ▪ To enhance pupils vocabulary; ▪ To encourage pupils to work efficiently with peers.
Theres also an impressive base of research literature on the role of images in learning, foremost among it US psychologist Richard Mayers cognitive theory of multimedia learning. This theory proposes that people learn more deeply from words and pictures than from words alone.
Pictures can be used to transform abstract ideas into realistic ideas. Pictures can make learners more engaged in the lesson and also facilitates further learning. Pictures tend to engage both sides of the brain of learners, making it easier for them to remember and recall the visual stimuli provided.
