This tutorial provides a step-by-step guide on obtaining a copy of your birth certificate, a vital document for proving identity and citizenship. First, identify the state or territory of your birth, as birth certificates are issued there. Next, contact the relevant Vital Records Office and request your certificate, supplying necessary information such as your full name, date of birth, place of birth, and parents' names. Pay the required fee, which varies between ten and fifty dollars. Processing times can take from several days to weeks, after which you will receive your certificate by mail or in person. For those born abroad, contact the US Department of State for a consular report of birth abroad.

What happens to an adopted persons original birth certificate after a new amended birth certificate is issued? The original birth certificate is typically sealed and made unavailable to the public and, in many states, unavailable to the adopted person, even as an adult.
Is it safe to send a birth certificate through email? Your birth certificate is the most important document for proving your identity. If this falls into the wrong hands, you can become a victim of identity fraud. Consider safer methods such as a file-sharing service or in-person delivery of your secure document.
The first place to look for free adoption records is the agency that finalized the adoption. If you have this information, the agency should be able to provide you with non-identifying information such as the age and nationality of the birth parents and the childs place of birth.
You may be able to obtain a copy of the adoption record that is maintained by the superior court by filing a petition, under California Family Code 9200, in the clerks office of the county superior court where the adoption was finalized.
Illinois is a closed state regarding adoptions. Therefore, once an adoption is completed, the original birth record with the biological parent(s) listed and all associated documentation will become part of a sealed Illinois Department of Public Health file.
The clerk can provide you with certified copies of the Order of Adoption upon your request. After the adoption is final, the court will mail the VS-44 to the State Office of Vital Records. On this form, you may request an amended birth certificate that reflects this adoption.
An AUTHORIZED CERTIFIED COPY of a birth record is required to obtain a drivers license, passport, social security card and other services related to an individuals identity.
Obtain DNA tests for you and a parent or sibling. This will prove beyond any doubt whether youre related or adopted. If your parents wont agree to it, or youre afraid to ask, consider asking a sibling who you trust.
