1 Answer Go to your snapshot. Right click and choose "Create image" (assume the volume is bootable and it works). Fill out the info required. Image (aka AMI) will be created based on your snapshot and the info you will provide. Launch an instance from the AMI.
A snapshot is of an EBS volume where you are able to save state and reboot with the same data at a certain point in time. An AMI is similar, but it's for the EC2 instances themselves. You cannot take a snapshot of a non-ebs backed instance, but you can create an AMI (system image) of one.
Select your AMI in the list, and then choose Actions, Modify Image Permissions. Specify the AWS account ID of the user with whom you want to share the AMI in the AWS Account Number field, then choose Add Permission. To share this AMI with multiple users, repeat this step until you have added all the required users.
Log in to the AWS Management Console. If required, use the region selector in the top right corner to switch to the region where your instance was launched. Select your instance and then select the “Create Image” option in the “Actions” menu. Specify the name for the new image and then click the “Create Image” button.
You can restore a volume attached to an existing EC2 instance by creating a volume from its snapshot and attaching it to your instance. You can use the console, the AWS CLI, or the API operations to create a volume from an existing snapshot. You can then mount the volume to the instance by using the operating system.
AMIs are region specific. If you want to use an AMI from another region, you need to copy the AMI and select the destination region.
From the AMIs view of the AWS Management console select the AMI and click on Copy: Choose the Copy AMI operation and the Console will ask you where you would like to copy the AMI: After you have made your selections and started the copy you will be provided with the ID of the new AMI in the destination region:
To create an AMI from a snapshot using the console In the navigation pane, under Elastic Block Store, choose Snapshots. Choose the snapshot and choose Actions, Create Image. In the Create Image from EBS Snapshot dialog box, complete the fields to create your AMI, then choose Create.
Fundamentally, copying an EC2 instance to another takes a few steps. First, you need to create an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) of the instance you want to copy. Then, you need to copy that AMI to the target region. Last, you can use the relocated AMI to launch your new instance in your desired region.
You can use the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI) to start an image export task using VM Import/Export. Then, a copy of your Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is exported as a VM file and written to an Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) bucket.
