A single period (.) denotes the current folder/directory, and two periods (..) denote the previous directory, if available. This notation can be used to move back and/or create a different destination path.
The period refers to the current directory, from which the batch file was called.
Use a period as a directory component in a path to represent the current directory, for example . \temp. txt. For more information, see Paths. Use two consecutive periods (..) as a directory component in a path to represent the parent of the current directory, for example ..
Unix and Unix-like environments. In Unix-like operating systems, any file or folder that starts with a dot character (for example, /home/user/. config), commonly called a dot file or dotfile, is to be treated as hidden that is, the ls command does not display them unless the -a or -A flags ( ls -a or ls -A ) are used
Use a period to separate the base file name from the extension in the name of a directory or file. Use a backslash (\) to separate the components of a path.
A dot at the beginning of a filename hides the file in common file managers and for common shell programs.
Explanation: Periods should only be used for denoting a document or service version within the filename (e.g., 1.0. 0). 2. Hyphens should be used between words within the filename.
The period is a link or pathname to the current folder aka a directory. The double period is a link or pathname to the parent folder or directory. Clicking on the period or double period is a convenient way to move within the directory or folder structure.
