A snapshot is of an EBS volume where you are able to save state and reboot with the same data at a certain point in time. An AMI is similar, but its for the EC2 instances themselves. You cannot take a snapshot of a non-ebs backed instance, but you can create an AMI (system image) of one.
Its not possible to move an existing instance to another subnet, Availability Zone, or VPC. Instead, you can manually migrate the instance by creating a new Amazon Machine Image (AMI) from the source instance. Then, launch a new instance using the new AMI in the desired subnet, Availability Zone, or VPC.
Log in to the AWS Management Console. If required, use the region selector in the top right corner to switch to the region where your instance was launched. Select your instance and then select the Create Image option in the Actions menu. Specify the name for the new image and then click the Create Image button.
1 Answer Go to your snapshot. Right click and choose Create image (assume the volume is bootable and it works). Fill out the info required. Image (aka AMI) will be created based on your snapshot and the info you will provide. Launch an instance from the AMI.
Go to AWS console. Step 2: Connect to Ireland region. Step 3: Go to EC2 dashboard. Step 4: Find the public AMI. Click on AMIs. Step 5: Open copy AMI wizard. Right click on instance. Step 6: Start AMI copy. Choose the new destination region. Step 7: Connect to the new region. Step 8: Find the new AMI ID.
You can restore a volume attached to an existing EC2 instance by creating a volume from its snapshot and attaching it to your instance. You can use the console, the AWS CLI, or the API operations to create a volume from an existing snapshot. You can then mount the volume to the instance by using the operating system.
You can export previously imported EC2 instances using the Amazon EC2 API tools. You simply specify the target instance, virtual machine file format and a destination S3 bucket, and VM Import/Export will automatically export the instance to the S3 bucket.
Steps for migration with AWS MGN Create the Replication Settings template. the AWS Replication Agent on your source instances to add them to the AWS MGN console. Configure the launch settings for each source server. Initiate the test/cutover to the target Region.
Using the EC2 Console Open Amazon EC2 console, and select the region that contains the AMI you want to use. In the left-hand navigation, select AMIs under Images to display all AMIs in your selected region. For the AMI you want to copy, right click to show Actions, and then select Copy AMI.
To create a copy, instance, or reference, hold down the Shift key as you move, rotate, or scale the selection. The general term for duplicating objects is cloning.
