Legal deposit is a legal requirement that a person or group submit copies of their publications to a repository, usually a library.
To register a work, submit a completed application form, and a nonreturnable copy or copies of the work to be registered. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section Registration Procedures., and Circular 4, Copyright Office Fees.
Include the details of the deposit agreement, including the amount, when its due, and what it covers. Specify any additional terms for the deposit, including how the deposit will be handled if the deal falls through. Be sure to include the signatures of both parties to make it a legally binding document.
The best edition is the edition published in the United States at any time before the date of deposit in the Copyright Office that the Library of Congress determines to be most suitable for its purposes.
