Proofreading marks (also called proofreaders marks) are symbols and notations for correcting typeset pages. The proofreader places these marks in the margins and in corresponding lines of text. A slash separates marginal marks that appear on the same line.
The proofreader will insert whatever punctuation symbol youre missing. The up arrow is used for inserting marks at the bottom of the word, such as a semicolon or comma. The down arrow is used for an apostrophe or single quotation mark.
Proofreading marks, or editing symbols, are universal marks that are hand-written on a piece of writing to indicate errors. Separate proofreading marks exist for errors in punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and formatting making it easier for the writer to identify and later correct the errors.
Proofreading marks are used by editors to point out changes that need making in your document. They are typically located in the right and left margins of a printed document with pointers to where in the text changes are recommended.
Copy editing makes sure a piece of writing is accurate, clear and correct. Its the step that gets a text ready to publish. Specifically, depending on the publication, it involves most or all of the following: Checking the facts (names, dates, times, places, past events, etc.).
