The first jobs report of this year covering December 2020 was underwhelming to say the least. And in it, the impact of the resurgence of COVID-19 is quite clear. The US economy lost 140,000 jobs in the month of December, ending the labor market seven-month streak of payroll gains. Service industries took the majority of the hit. Leisure and hospitality employment fell by nearly half a million with 3/4 of that decrease coming in food service and drinking establishments. Retail remained a bit of a bright spot adding over 100,000 jobs in the month of December.
