You may be able to obtain a copy of the adoption record that is maintained by the superior court by filing a petition, under California Family Code 9200, in the clerks office of the county superior court where the adoption was finalized.
Any adopted person who was born in Illinois prior to January 1, 1946, may file with the Adoption Registry a request for a noncertified copy of an original birth certificate. The registry shall provide the adoptee with an unaltered, noncertified copy of his or her original birth certificate upon receipt of the request.
In Florida, adoption records are sealed. You need a court order to obtain copies of the original birth certificate. See a list of the Florida Clerks of Court.
The first place to look for free adoption records is the agency that finalized the adoption. If you have this information, the agency should be able to provide you with non-identifying information such as the age and nationality of the birth parents and the childs place of birth.
What should be included? Information as to how they know you, including how long they may have known you. Any information about your character. Describe your strengths. Do they recommend that you adopt. Attributes you may have that would be fitting for adopting/parenting a child. Information about your marriage/relationship.
Contact the county clerk in the county in which you were adopted and ask for guidance on filing a petition to unseal your California Department of Health adoption records. You can complete the petition process and file your petition with the court of record in the county in which you were adopted.
The agency you work with will ask you to provide between three and five adoption reference letters. Similar to reference letters for a college or job, the letter of recommendation for adoption is to help your adoption specialist better understand who you are.
Judges do have the power to re-open the records, but only for individuals who are legally entitled or have good reasons to get a copy. To access the sealed records, you must file an application with the court clerk in the county where the adoption took place.
