hello my name is jeff schalleberger and im going to talk to you a little bit about a technique called x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy or xps uh we offer this here in the materials characterization lab at penn state uh you may have also heard the term esca used thats exactly the same technique it stands for electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis xps is by far the more commonly used terms thats what ill use throughout my presentation here xps is based on the photoelectric effect the photoelectric effect is we shine light onto a solid sample and we uh that light in our case in the form of low energy x-rays ejects electrons that were originally bound to the atoms in the material and we knock those electrons off into the vacuum and ultimately measure these with a spectrometer the equation that describes the photoelectric effect is shown here very simple equation this is actually what albert einstein won his nobel prize for in 1921 for some work he did explaining this effect in 190

XPS is used to provide information about the elemental composition of the coatings. The XPS spectrometer is used to obtain a survey spectrum, from which the elements present can be determined. Individual spectral peaks are then examined at higher energy resolution to give information on chemical state.
Carbon Non-Metals Primary XPS region: C1s.

It says this is the relative number of electrons that requires this much energy to be removed. So if you look at the height of the peaks it will tell you how many electrons.

Yes, usually. If the entire PES is given the first peak will always represent electrons in the 1s.
XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
A photoelecton spectrum can show the relative energies of occupied molecular orbitals by ionization. (i.e. ejection of an electron). A photoelectron spectrum can also be used to determine energy spacing between vibrational levels of a given electronic state.
