Copies one or more than one files to another location. Quoting from the result of xcopy /? Copies files and directory trees. The essential difference between the two commands is that when you provide the path of a folder to copy , only the files in that folder will be copied to the specified destination.
A binary file is a file whose content is in a binary format consisting of a series of sequential bytes, each of which is eight bits in length. The content must be interpreted by a program or a hardware processor that understands in advance exactly how that content is formatted and how to read the data.
XCOPY is similar to the COPY command except that it has additional switches to specify both the source and destination in detail. /D:mm-dd-yyyy Copy files changed on or after the specified date. If no date is given, copy only files whose source date/time is newer than the destination time.
The average Disk Read Transfer is better for XCopy (76.15 MB/Sec vs. 75.28 MB/Sec), the minimum Disk Read Transfer is better for Robocopy (4.74 MB/Sec vs.Robocopy vs. XCopy File Copy Performance. The COPY option specifies that the source data stream is written on the specified STREAM OUTPUT file without alteration. If no file reference is given, the default is the output file SYSPRINT. Each new record in the input stream starts a new record on the COPY file.
Unlike Xcopy, Robocopy is used to mirror or synchronize directories. Robocopy will be able to check the target directory and delete files that are no longer in the main tree, instead of copying all files from one directory to another.
The COPY command copies the specified records from one or more input files to an output file. The files can reside on different devices or on multifile tapes. You can use a single copy command to create several different output files.
In many cases copying a single file is best done with the COPY command. When copying a single file with XCOPY, there is no option to indicate if the destination is a filename or a directory (with the filename defaulting to that of the source file).
Starting with the definitions, the copy command is used for copying files or data, and Xcopy is used to copy multiple files or complete directory trees from one directory to another, etc.
Xcopy minimises the number of read seeks by loading multiple files into memory on a single read to speed up the copy.
