Art theft, sometimes called artnapping, is the stealing of paintings, sculptures, or other forms of visual art from galleries, museums or other public and private locations. Stolen art is often resold or used by criminals as collateral to secure loans.
Tracing:Drawing over the original art line by line. Even using just part of the drawing is still tracing. Even if I changed the character to my own or flipped/rotated it, its still tracing. ALWAYS credit the original artist if you trace. Copying:Imitating or drawing similarly to the original art.
1. You literally take someone elses art (art that you didnt make) and claim it as your own. 2. You steal art from another source (i.e. a photograph on Instagram) without the artists permission and without citing it.
Copy being to borrow an idea for its known useful results, steal being to take ownership of an idea and extend it to create some novel result. Its very important to note that while more skill is implied the further you go towards stealing, copying is not bad. On the contrary, its explicitly good.
Examples of Design Plagiarism Using someone elses UX copy in your own designs without permission or attribution. Copying original media, banners, and logos without permission or attribution. Using or copying someone elses UI kit without permission or attribution.
When an artist copies an art work its called an art reproduction or reproduction oil painting or simply replica art. Artists have been copying art since the 15th century with copies of woodblock illustrations.
If you copy another artists work it is illegal to sell it as your own without permission from the original artist as this would infringe their copyright.
Copying another artists work can be a wonderful way to learn, get inspired, get ideas, honor an influence you love, and create something new. All art is a mash up of ideas, and we can all influence and inspire each other, so long as we are creating and sharing from a place of honesty and transparency.
