If the donation isnt cash, the Fair Market Value (FMV) of the donated item is generally used in the journal entry. FMV is the estimated market value at which an asset would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller.
Yes, a 501(c)3 can donate money to an individual and this is often done in the form of scholarships. However, the donation must fall under the broader purview of your organizations mission and cannot be made exceptionally to a particular individual for any specified reason.
A 501c3 organization can spend funds only related to its tax-exempt philanthropic purposes. As we discussed above, if the nonprofit falls under one of these categories- charitable, educational, religious, scientific, literary, or other specified purposes, then it is only under this category that they can make spends.
For accounting purposes, make sure to consider donations as nonoperating expenses. No profits are made when you make a donation. For the following examples, donation expense journal entries take place in the general ledger.
When you receive contributed services, record the transaction in your accounting system as a net zero transaction; the in-kind contribution is recorded as revenue with a corresponding expense for the services provided.
For example, revenue would be recorded as Gifts In-Kind Services, and the expense would be recorded as Professional Services. Once youve determined the fair value of your donation, youll record the journal entry. The revenue will equal the expense.
Go to Settings ⚙ and select Products services (Take me there). Select New and then Service. In the Product/Service information panel, add a Name and Description suitable for sales, pledge, or donation receipts. From the Income account ▼ dropdown menu, select the In-kind donations income account you created.
