In the past, if you had a simple tax return to prepare, you likely filed your return with IRS Form 1040EZ. This form covered a broad range of taxpayers. However, filing with Form 1040EZ is no longer an option. This form has since been replaced by Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR, depending on your tax situation.
Although you will have to calculate your taxes yourself, the IRS allows you to e-file the forms at no chargebut you must create an online account with the IRS in order to do so.
The simplest IRS form is the Form 1040EZ. The 1040A covers several additional items not addressed by the EZ. And finally, the IRS Form 1040 should be used when itemizing deductions and reporting more complex investments and other income. Here are a few general guidelines on which form to use.
Form 1040EZ was ultimately scrapped due to the limitations of the form. The IRS opted for the building block approach of allowing taxpayers to more easily add allowances or credits as applicable to their return.
To begin with, each has a different level of complexity. The standard 1040 form is the most complex of the three, while the 1040EZ is the simplest (hence its nickname of simple income tax return), and the 1040A is somewhere in the middle.
Form 1040-EZ: Income Tax Return for Single and Joint Filers With No Dependents. Form 1040-EZ was the shortest of the 1040 forms and the easiest to complete. It was meant for individuals who only took the standard deduction and didnt itemize.
However, filing with Form 1040EZ is no longer an option. This form has since been replaced by Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR, depending on your tax situation.
On Line 1, include the income reported on your Form W-2 and attach your W-2 to the 1040EZ. On Line 2 you should report the taxable interest you earned. Remember, if this is more than $1,500 you cannot use Form 1040EZ. On Line 3, report any unemployment benefits or Alaska Permanent Fund dividend payments you received.
