Its all breadth and no depth. A strong letter would dive deeply into specific skills or qualities, rather than skimming over a lot of different points with a general overview. A recommendation letter should personalize a student and give deeper insight into her intellectual capacity and character.
What to Include in a Letter of Recommendation Salutation of one line. One paragraph detailing how you know the person and why you are qualified. One paragraph explaining why you recommend the person and details on what theyve done or accomplished. One summary reinforcing that you highly recommend the person.
Colleges and businesses may not discriminate, but an innocent comment in a letter of recommendation that alludes to someones race, age, sex, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or religion might trigger unconscious bias affecting a reviewers opinion.
Keep copies of letters After you receive your letters of recommendation, make copies and store them in a place where you can access them again later.
The letter should be about one page in length and generally consist of three parts: opening, body, and closing. The writer should explain the relationship between himself/herself and the candidate as well as why the letter is being written.
While reducing the time it takes to write recommendations, an organized narrative letter also makes it easier for admission professionals and employers to read. This new style is a conglomeration of headers, narratives, and bullet points focused on the relevant information about the student.
A successful letter should avoid: General language or overly broad descriptors of the students performance in the classroom; Focusing on a students punctuality or ability to complete the readings. Too much time and attention detailing the relationship with the student or the content of the course.
Your recommendations should be concise and specific. Avoid vague or general statements and provide actionable steps that can be taken to address the research gaps you have identified.
