Staccato (the dot) meaning to be played fairly short - around half the shown length - while the line means hold the note for at least its full duration!
A dot added to a note increases the duration of that note by half. A second dot represents half the value of the first dot, or a quarter of the original duration. (These are known as double-dotted notes.)
A dotted whole note equals 6 beats, but it all depends what time signature you playing a dotted whole note in. In a 6/4 time signature a dotted whole note would equal 6 beats.
If it is above or below the note is played staccato. If its on the right side of the note it extends the value. Staccato means to hold the note for only half as long and rest the remaining length of the note. A dot on the side extends the note by half.
A dot is written immediately after a note or rest, and it increases its duration by half (Example 6). For example, a quarter note is equivalent in duration to two eighth notes; therefore, a dotted quarter note would be equivalent to three eighth notes.
A dot above or below a note tells you to play it short and detached. This should not be confused with a dot after a note which alters its value. Short, detached, jumpy notes are called staccato. Listen to the two examples below to hear how the same notes sound when played without and with accents.
A dot written after a note adds one-half of the notes value to the original notes value. A quarter note equals one beat. A dot after the quarter note adds beat ( of the original value). A dotted quarter note equals 1 beats.
