Just like books, movies, and songs, federal copyright laws protect the intellectual property of architects and home designers by giving copyright protection to home plans and designs. The copyright laws prevent anyone from reproducing or reusing the plans or design without written permission from the copyright owner.
You have a copyright in your artwork as soon as it has been created and fixed in a tangible object. It does not need to be registered with the copyright office or have a copyright notice attached to receive copyright protection. A copyright lasts for the life of the artist, plus 70 years after the artists death.
Even though you may have paid for design work on the original building, the architect retains ownership and docHub control over the design documents, based on copyright law and the terms of a commonly used owner-architect agreement.
A design has copyright protection automatically beginning at the time of creation. Thus, an architect need not register a work nor place notice on the work to obtain copyright protection.
However, if your work includes both layout design, such as a web page, and some individual elements, such as logos, photos, text or illustrations, you will own copyright in the layout and the elements you created.
The registration procedure includes filing an application form with the U.S. Copyright Office, with different forms based on the type of the work, such as literary works, visual works, or sound recordings. You then deposit copies of the work being registered.
A technical drawing or blueprint is copyrighted as soon as it has been created and fixed in a tangible object. It does not need to be registered with the copyright office, nor does it need to include a copyright notice to receive copyright protection.
