hello my name is Ruth Carter and Im a licensed attorney in Arizona and this is your question of the day so somebody asked me can i copyright a four line quote or a short paragraph okay I think this question came in in response to a video I did previously about how you cant get a copyright in a short phrase like Paris Hilton could not get a copyright in thats hot she got trademarks in it but not a copyright so I think this person is asking is like I know short phrases cant be copyrighted so whats the minimum length of a work that I have to create before I can get a copyright well Im sorry to say that the Copyright Office has never said like this many characters is sufficient to be a literary work but a short paragraph as long as it is an original work of authorship thats fixed in a tangible medium likely qualifies as something that is protectable under the copyright laws so thats all it takes to get if you want to register your work you fill out an application on the copyright g

Under the fair use doctrine of the U.S. copyright statute, it is permissible to use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports.
The use of relatively short direct quotes from a published work does not usually require permission from the copyright holder as it typically falls under the fair use provision.
Theres no one-size-fits-all rule about how much you can quote. Instead, factors such as the purpose of your use, the nature of the work youre quoting, the amount youre quoting, and the potential market impact all play a role in determining whether your use is permissible or constitutes copyright infringement.
If youre seeking permission to quote from a book, look on the copyright page for the rights holder; its usually the author. However, assuming the book is currently in print and on sale, normally you contact the publisher for permission. You can also try contacting the author or the authors literary agent or estate.
