The overall budget for the project is $90 million, $30 million of which comes from the citys budget. The rest of the money is supposed to come from private donations funneled through the Atlanta Police Foundation (APF), the nonprofit arm of the Atlanta Police Department (APD).
The land is owned by the City of Atlanta. Once complete, the center is planned to be used as a training campus for police and fire services and is expected to open at the end of 2023.
There are SIXTY-NINE Cop Cities being built or already built since 2020 across the US. These urban counter-insurgency training centers are called euphemisms like public safety facility. The only states without plans for this type of project are ND, VT WY.
The city of Atlanta wants to build a $90 million police training facility. If constructed, Cop City would be one of the largest militarized police training centers in the countryall built by clear-cutting Atlantas largest green space. The facility faces massive opposition in Atlanta and nationally.
The project. The planned training center is being built on a site that previously housed a city-run prison farm. The $90 million Atlanta Public Safety Training Center plans call for a mock city, burn buildings, a K-9 unit kennel and training, firing and explosive ranges, and a driving course for emergency vehicles.
The Home Depot has donated at least $361,500 to APF between 2016 and 2022 and is listed as a corporate sponsor for the Foundations September 2023 event. The companys vice president of technology, Daniel Grider, sits on the APF Board of Trustees. UPS donated $1 million to the APF in 2022.
In addition to being the lead contractor for Cop City, Brasfield Gorrie pledged to donate over $1 million to the Atlanta Police Foundation, the entity behind the project. Brasfield Gorrie Division Manager Justin Rannick also sits on the Foundations advisory board.
The report also lists corporate and foundation donors, funders, and sponsors for the Atlanta Police Foundation (APF), including , Home Depot, and Delta Airlines. AFSC plans to use the information gathered to pressure corporate sponsors of Cop City to divest from the project.
