Copies of patents, patent applications, and many other patent-related filings are available on the USPTO web site. Patent searching can be done directly on the USPTOs web site. Full text and images are available for patents from 1976 to the most recent Tuesday.
Copying a patented product is illegal and can result in severe legal consequences. A patent is a form of intellectual property protection that grants the owner exclusive rights to manufacture, use, and sell the invention for a specified period.
There are several ways to get complete copies of patents. You can either contact the United States Patent and Trademark Office or contact a commercial document supplier. Please note that you will need to know the exact patent numbers in order to obtain copies.
Obtaining a duplicate Ribbon Copy requires filing a petition under 37 CFR 1.182 and paying a fee under 37 CFR 1.17(f), which is currently $400 (discounts for small or micro entities are available). The petition should lay out the circumstances surrounding the loss, destruction, theft, etc. of the original Ribbon Copy.
Generally, products should be marked with Patent [Number] or Pat. [Number] where the applicable patent number or numbers are included.
Presentation patent. A presentation patent is a certified copy of the first page of an issued patent. The document is photocopied onto 24 lb. card stock, has a unique certification statement with a special ribbon and seal, and is suitable for framing and display. learn more about Presentation patent.
A patent owner often will mark a product with the patent number, patent, or the abbreviation pat to notify others of their patent rights, but otherwise, there is no particular symbol used to identify a patent.
Ribbon Copies After you pay the issue fee in an allowed patent application, the USPTO issues a patent on a subsequent Tuesday and mails out a Ribbon Copy.
