If you have a fixed-term membership, e.g. for 12 months, but your circumstances change in an unforeseeable way a long-term illness, losing your job or having to move home, you could have grounds for immediate cancellation.
Put your notice to cancel in writing Your gym membership agreement - the one you probably didnt read when you signed on the dotted line, sets out the specific conditions for cancelling early. Some gyms demand notice in writing, often with a specific form to fill in.
Like many contracts, cancelling a gym membership may mean paying a fee. Even if the contract requires you to visit the centre to cancel in-person, you should still provide a written cancellation as well. Formally request to cancel your membership. Provide a brief account of your reason(s) for canceling your membership. Acknowledge the gyms cancellation policy and your adherence to it (are you within your right to cancel, will you pay the cancellation fee or are you eligible for a waiver, etc.).

If they wont let you cancel, you should say the following (or put it in writing): The Competition and Markets Authority advises that a gym contract is unfair if it doesnt let a member cancel because theyve had a change in circumstances which means they cant afford the membership.
In the letter, clearly state your desire to cancel, why you want to cancel, the terms of your cancellation, and the exact date when you want your membership cancelled.
