Security groups are VPC specific (and therefore region-specific) they can only be used within the VPC they are created.
Launching the instance from the snapshot is an easy process. You can create a snapshots everyday as the part of your backup process. It is possible that one day you might want to restore your instance from the snapshot incase of a corrupted Operating System or you want to revert back from an unwanted change.
To copy your AMI from one region to another region, you can follow the below-given steps. Login to your AWS account. Go to your EC2 dashboard. Click on the AMI option. Select your AMI and in Actions, you can find Copy AMI.
You can restore a volume attached to an existing EC2 instance by creating a volume from its snapshot and attaching it to your instance. You can use the console, the AWS CLI, or the API operations to create a volume from an existing snapshot. You can then mount the volume to the instance by using the operating system.
You cant copy an encrypted AMI that was shared with you from another account. Instead, if the underlying snapshot and encryption key were shared with you, you can copy the snapshot while re-encrypting it with a key of your own. You own the copied snapshot and can register it as a new AMI.
1 Answer Go to your snapshot. Right click and choose Create image (assume the volume is bootable and it works). Fill out the info required. Image (aka AMI) will be created based on your snapshot and the info you will provide. Launch an instance from the AMI.
A security group is tied to a region and can be assigned only to instances in the same region.
A snapshot is of an EBS volume where you are able to save state and reboot with the same data at a certain point in time. An AMI is similar, but its for the EC2 instances themselves. You cannot take a snapshot of a non-ebs backed instance, but you can create an AMI (system image) of one.
Share an AMI (console) In the navigation pane, choose AMIs. Select your AMI in the list, and then choose Actions, Edit AMI permissions. Choose Private. Under Shared accounts, choose Add account ID. For AWS account ID, enter the AWS account ID with which you want to share the AMI, and then choose Share AMI.
Export one security group to CSV Login to the AWS console, navigate to the EC2 service. Select Security Groups. Select the square checkbox just for one or more security groups. Youll see a big dropdown button that says, Export Security Groups to CSV, simply click it! Done, your CSV will automatically download.
