Body copy plays a crucial role in communicating the main message or content of a design piece, such as a brochure, magazine, or website. It is usually set in a legible typeface and size for easy reading, often contrasting with headlines or display text for emphasis.
The body copy adds even more details: For example, the engineers use a stethoscope to listen for axle-whine. This car is quiet is a claim that the reader can choose to believe or not believe. But if you say we used a stethoscope to listen for axle-whine, how can your reader not believe the car is quiet?
How do you make your body copy engaging? Use short sentences and paragraphs. Write with personality and emotion. Use the AIDA formula. Use formatting and design. Edit and proofread. Heres what else to consider. Be the first to add your personal experience.
Many fonts are suitable for body copy. Use a font that is easy to read at a size of 14 points. If it isnt easy to read at that size, dont use it for body copy. Much of the body copy we read is in paragraph form. Choose a serif or sans serif font. Select a font family rather than a single typeface.
Size: The standard for body copy is 10/12 (10-point type with 12-point leading). You adjust the point size until there are 912 words per line. This can vary from 9 to 12 point in size. The leading will be determined by the amount of line spacing built into the font used and the x-height.
Serif fonts like Palatino, Georgia, and Times New Roman reign supreme in body text due to their serifsthe small strokes that guide the eye fluidly from one character to another, creating cohesive lines that facilitate swift navigation through dense paragraphs.
Body text or body copy is the text forming the main content of a book, magazine, web page, or any other printed or digital work. This is as a contrast to both additional components such as headings, images, charts, footnotes etc. on each page, and also the pages of front matter that form the introduction to a book.
Typefaces made for body text use are designed to be easily and comfortably read at small sizes, so their glyph shapes are intentionally subtle and sturdy. Look for typefaces with high x-heights and few frills.
