For both tests a doctor or nurse takes a sample of cells from the cervix. However, the Pap smear test used to look for abnormal cells in the cervix, while the cervical screening test looks for HPV infection. The new test for HPV can identify women who could be at risk of cervical cancer earlier than the Pap test could.
The HPV test looks for the virus (human papillomavirus) that can cause cell changes on the cervix. The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately.
Cervical cell classes: (A) normal squamous, (B) normal columnar, and (C) low-grade dysplasia; (D) high-grade dysplasia (HGD) with moderate dysplasia, (E) HGD with severe dysplasia, and (F) carcinoma in situ.
Image-Guided Pap with Age-Based Screening Protocols - This new test code is designed to help clinicians order age-appropriate testing for cervical cancer screening and STIs.
Why does the new guideline recommend screening starting at age 25, instead of age 21? Using information from new studies, ACS concluded that the benefits of cervical cancer screening do not outweigh the harms for people aged 21 to 24 years old. This is an important change that is related to HPV vaccines.
The Pap test looks for cells that are not normal and can cause cancer of the cervix. This is also called cervical cancer. Most women ages 21 to 65 need regular Pap tests.
If you are at least age 21, you should start cervical cancer screening, even if you are not yet sexually active. If you are younger than 30, you can likely be tested for cervical cancer every other year instead of yearly.
A Pap smear is used to screen for cervical cancer. The Pap smear is usually done in conjunction with a pelvic exam. In women older than age 30, the Pap test may be combined with a test for human papillomavirus (HPV) a common sexually transmitted infection that can cause cervical cancer.
