A scholarship agreement is a legal contract between a giver and a scholarship recipient that governs the terms of their relationship. The contract outlines the basic details about each party, how much scholarship money is being granted, and what criteria the recipient must meet in order to receive the scholarship.
Many times if the student has not enrolled in classes during those 12 months, it expires. In almost all cases, scholarships are put directly towards your colleges tuition and expenses, rather than a check sent to you. If you choose not to go to school, it will not be put in a savings account for later use.
What happens to leftover scholarship money. If you earned scholarships and grants that add up to more than your total cost of attendance, your school may send you a refund of the leftover scholarship money. Keep in mind, you may have to pay taxes on that amount.
Your scholarship will be on hold for the time period your academic department has approved for your leave of absence.
If you fail a class, then you may lose your grant or need to pay it back. If your GPA was high enough before you failed a class, then you might still be in the clear. The reason you failed the class may have a bigger impact on you if you have a Pell Grant.
In general, scholarships do not have to be paid back if you drop out of college. However, each scholarship provider has its own rules and regulations. Some private scholarship providers have clauses that state a student must be enrolled full-time or complete their degree in a specific field.
However, its important for students and parents to understand that while an athletic scholarship is a huge benefit to the student, it is also a contract.
