There are a number of methods for doing this. Heres the one Im going to use. Ive drawn a line, which Im called line l, and above the line Ive got point P. What I want to do is draw a line through point P that is parallel to line l. Heres how Im going to do it. Im going to place a point on line l, and Ill call that point A. You can put this point just about anywhere. Now Ill draw a line through points A and P. Now the line that Ive drawn creates an angle. My next step is going to get a copy that angle over to point P. So Ill do this by placing my compass point on point A and drawing an arc ]that goes through those two lines. And now Ill copy that by placing the compass point on P drawing another arc. And now Im going to copy the angle at A
